The Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine is located in the Faculty of Medicine and offers master’s (M.Sc.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) graduate programs in neuroscience.

The programs promote the development of theoretical knowledge and critical analysis skills. In order to acquire these skills, the student reads and critically analyzes scientific literature, performs experiments in the laboratory and analyzes the results and data obtained, in order to present them in the form of posters or seminars. The programs prepare candidates for a variety of teaching and research careers inside and outside academia.

Graduates of this program will have gained autonomy in research, and in writing articles and grant applications. The full range of courses, state-of-the-art facilities, and extensive research opportunities allow for impeccable training in neuroscience.

The Department participates in multidisciplinary programs in human and molecular genetics and in pathology and experimental medicine at the master’s and doctoral levels.

Description of the multidisciplinary program

The objective of the multidisciplinary program in Pathology and Experimental Medicine is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to examine the basic mechanisms of disease pathology and to develop new strategies for prevention and treatment. The degree granted indicates the main program with the mention “specialization in pathology and experimental medicine”.

Main areas of research

The Department is located in the University of Ottawa Health Sciences Centre. It has close ties to research conducted by several of the following institutes: The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, The University of Ottawa Heart Institute, The Mental Health Research Institute of the Royal Ottawa Hospital, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) Research Institute, the Elisabeth Bruyère Hospital and the National Research Council Canada.
